I have a guilty conscience

Little Ladies

Montreal, Quebec

Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of speaking at a panel during Montreal’s Mural Festival. Being the proud owner of some pretty bad social anxiety the notion public speaking is not my fave, so I’m ashamed to say I often turn down these kind of opportunities, but after hearing the topic we would be discussing I knew I needed to push myself to be a part of it. Titled Digital Girl in a Digital World, the panel was going to be all about digital entrepreneurism through the feminist lens. Being that both topics are things I love to discuss, I looked forward to the day where I could share my little story, and hear what others had experienced trying to make it as females on the world wide web.

The panel itself was a breath of fresh empowered air. I was ready to talk numbers, engagement, and brand adjacency and diversification, but was pleasantly surprised when the discussion turned to self introspection/expression, personal experience, and the art behind the madness that is social media. I know I was invited to the panel to share some kind of knowledge or wisdom I’ve learned along the way, but most days I feel like I’m figuring it out all over again myself. That being said, here are some things I know for sure…the Cliffs Notes anyway.

The power of collaboration when using social media’s as a business or branding tool, should serve as number one goal. Competition is omnipresent in every field, but it doesn’t mean that working with others that share similar aspirations is off limits. It should be encouraged, especially as women, who since the beginning of time have been pitted against one another when attempting to reach personal and professional desires.  Here’s the secret. Never compare yourself to anyone else, cherish what makes you unique, and different instead. Stay humble and hard working and you’ll never need to step on others to get where you’re tying to go. Most of all keep being kind to one another and supporting each other. Especially for the little ladies that will join us on the internet one day. Let’s change the cycle, so they grow up feeling empowered and encouraged by little ladies everywhere…Pardon my cheese.
